You may correct typos and undelete messages that you unintentionally sent to the incorrect recipient by using the Messages app’s unsend and edit features.
Note: You must be using iMessage in order to retract or edit text messages.
Unsend a message:
A newly transmitted communication is reversible for two minutes after it is sent.
- Get your iPhone’s Messages app open.
- To undo send, touch and hold the message bubble and then tap it.
- Both your and the recipient’s conversation transcripts have a note attesting to your unsending the message.
- The communication is deleted from the recipient’s device when you unsend it.
The initial message stays in the discussion if you’re messaging someone who isn’t using iOS 16, iPadOS 16, macOS 13, or later. You are informed that the original message may still be visible to the receiver in the message transcript when you unsend a message.
Edit a sent message:
Within fifteen minutes of sending a message, you have the ability to change it five times.
- Get your iPhone’s Messages app open.
- To edit a message, choose a discussion that contains it.
- Holding down the message bubble with your finger, tap Edit.
- After making any changes, click the Send Edit or Cancel Edit buttons to send the message again with the modifications made.
Note: The discussion transcript indicates that the communication has been edited.
On both your iPhone and the recipient’s device, the message bubble refreshes to show the changes you make, and you can both touch Edited to view earlier drafts of the message.
Senders of messages to recipients not running iOS 16, iPadOS 16, macOS 13, or later receive follow-up messages that begin with “Edited to” and contain your updated message within quote marks.
